Day 7, Friday, January 19 KONA, HAWAII
King Kamehameha. Captain James Cook. The Fire Goddess Pele. The stuff legends are made of - and the island of Hawaii is just that legendary. The entire island is home to countless places that escape comprehension: Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes; tropical rainforests; lava deserts; towering mountains; beaches of white, green and black; and waterfalls careening through vibrant valleys of color.
Today we visit Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company where nuts and coffee are grown and processed; and Kahua Ranch, an 8500-acre working cattle ranch overlooking the lush pasture lands of the Kohala Mountains and the Pacific coastline. We enjoy lunch at Merrimans Restaurant, described as “Hawaiian Art Deco wth a splash of French Country.” This afternoon we visit Honopua Farm, a beautiful family farm featuring organic vegetables, Waimea lavender and fresh cutflowers before returning to the ship. (B,L,D)
Day 8, Saturday, January 20 NAWILIWILI, KAUAI
For decades Hollywood has had a love affair with Kauai. Soon you'll know why. Scenes from Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, King Kong, and South Pacific were all filmed here. Exploring Kauai - location of Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific - for yourself, you'll discover a land of contrast, a land so diverse it defies belief. Today is yours - you may choose an optional shore excursion such as a scenic boat drive up the Wailua River, during which you will be entertained with local music, dance, and narrations. Or, take a brief walk to the Fern Grotto, a hauntingly beautiful cave and romantic spot where thousands of couples choose to get married. Or, visit the valley of the Sleeping Giant and take a short walk to Opaeka's Falls, where the Wailua River makes a dramatic plunge over a high cliff. You'll see places you never dreamed existed. And once you've been there, you'll always dream of going back. (B,L,D)
