March 2006
Now is the time of year that you are probably reviewing your marketing plans and exploring new opportunities. Let me suggest that you consider a “loyalty program,” or what some folks call a “reward program.” These programs reward customers for returning again and again, and help them become loyal to your business.
There are several common approaches to loyalty programs; the great thing is that you can design the program however you want, to fit your business. Here are some examples:
- Buy 6 products, get one free. (You decide how many)
- Free gift or cash back when customer reaches specified spending level(s)
- Every sale counts towards a discount
- Pay for so many admissions/tickets, get one free
Why is it done?
- To get your customers to buy more frequently
- To get your customers to visit your business more often
- To increase sales
- To reward your best customers
- To strengthen a season or product category
According to a survey done by USA Today, people like loyalty programs because they receive discounts, cash back, free merchandise, special benefits or upgrades.
I have seen these programs work for garden centers, bakeries, ice cream shops, corn maze admission and many other retail businesses. It’s as easy as producing a business card size card and getting it printed.
TIP: An easy way to build your mailing list is to have the back side of the card request their name, address and email prior to receiving reward.
If you’d like to see some samples of cards that I have collected from all types of business establishments just click here. Better yet, look inside your wallet. I bet you might have a few loyalty cards of your own.
Loyalty programs are just one of twenty five easy marketing strategies described in my book Fresh Grown Promotions for just $14.95 If you’d like to know more about the book just click here.
It is not too late to submit your application to the USDA for a Value Added Producer Grant, but be aware that the deadline, March 31, is very fast approaching.
Quoting the application form:
“The primary objective of this grant program is to help eligible independent producers of agricultural commodities, agricultural producer groups, farmer and rancher cooperatives, and majority-controlled producer-based business ventures develop strategies to create marketing opportunities and to help develop business plans for viable marketing opportunities.”

Here’s a really interesting article we ran across recently. It states that Internet users make up their minds about the quality of a website in just one- twentieth of a second! That’s right, people decide how they feel about a website in 50 milliseconds- barely enough time to even realize you’ve seen anything! Click here to read this unusual research story.
Another important part of your marketing plan is the creation and frequent update of your website.
When I visited the Flying W Guest Ranch in Sayre, OK last year, I realized they offered so much more than was on their website at that time.
A.L. and Don Whinery have worked hard on their ranch, and they were eager to invite Eckert AgriMarketing to produce their new website. So allow me now to invite you to visit the Flying W Guest Ranch-and if you don’t know what a “buffalo kill site” is, be sure to check out this 2,300 year old artifact. Click here.
I will be hosting two telephone seminars this spring to help you develop your marketing skills, one on hosting groups and corporations, and the second on how to write press releases that get published.
The telephone seminar (teleseminar) allows me to help farmers who cannot make it to the larger conventions. You can call in by telephone from the farm and be part of these live seminars. It’s a very inexpensive way to hear the information and to ask questions directly related to your particular needs.
“Group & Corporate Events Can Yield Good Income” will discuss how to get started in hosting groups on the farm, as well as how to improve existing group and corporate programs. I'll also offer marketing tips on attracting new group and corporate business. This one-hour teleseminar will be held on April 10 at 7:00 p.m., CST.
In “Creating Press Releases that Get Published,” our senior writer Bill Mauk will join me as we help you understand the magic formula that makes editors take notice of your press releases. You'll learn how to develop that special “hook” that catches the newspaper’s attention and gets your stories published. This second teleseminar will be held on April 25, at 7:00 p.m. CST.
To learn more about these teleseminars and how to register and participate, click here.
Registration is $25.00 to participate in the live seminar (includes handout), or $39.95 to both participate and then receive a CD recording of the seminar to listen to again and again (includes handout, CD, free S & H).
Registration can be made online using your credit card, or call (314) 862- 6288.
